This PBS Nature video captures the story of how villagers in Iceland are saving young puffins. Every spring, hundreds of thousands of Atlantic puffins come to the archipelago to breed. They dig burrows in the cliffs on nearby islands and raise their young “pufflings.” When pufflings fledge, thousands are attracted by the lights of the town rather than flying out to sea. Many fall to the ground, where they face starvation and death. To avert that fate, the community goes on “puffling patrol” every night during puffling season, catches lost pufflings and bring them to the Puffin Rescue Center. Healthy pufflings are returned by townspeople to the cliffs of the island and thrown safely back out to sea and a new chance at life. [2025,12:49 min]
